Cancer
They said the word so gently,
But it roared within my head-
How could two small syllables
Summon so much dread?
And it seems to me ironic
That my life should now divide
Between time before the cancer
And this thorn that grows inside.
So, I gather all my armor
And I gird myself for war...
My shield of faith is blinding
All these horrors at my door.
Though my body may diminish
My spirit will not waiver,
Through every day and every trial
I feel it growing braver...
Oh Lord, you know my heartbeat
And the count of every hair,
Will I feel You even closer
When there isn't any there...?
Keep my hand in Yours, Lord
As I battle this disease
My soul is not defeated
By the cells that have been seized.
They call these cells malignant,
But they can't see inside my soul
Or see the fibers of my faith,
Growing strong and whole...
Oh God, I see Your kindness
Your great mercies for each need,
And this it cannot conquer...
On this, it cannot feed!
